How many social networking communities are you a member and actively participate?

There is no shortage of social networking communities (and niche membership sites) for baby boomers to join, connect, and fully participate. Our recent article about the number of men and women aged 45-65 joining Facebook makes it clear boomers are engaging in and enjoying virtual socialization.

Whether it is to stay in touch with family, friends and business colleagues, or to hook-up with old military buddies, former classmates, an old boyfriend or girlfriend, or just to meet new people, the popularity of virtual socialization is increasing daily.

There are communities like Facebook, Friendster and My Space that cater to all age groups. Then there are age-specific baby boomer communities like Eons, Boomj, and Silver Planet. Women, in particular, have a wide choice of sites including Vibrant Nation, Boomer Diva Nation, and National Association of Baby Boomer Women.

Although not a social networking community, there is even a niche membership-based community called Grandparents.com, which is rich in information specifically for grandparents.

Many boomers belong to more than one community.

BB[KC] is undertaking an informal poll to determine which social networking communities are the most popular among baby boomers. The poll allows you to vote only once, but you may check more than one community if you have multiple memberships. There is also a comment form if you have something you wish to say.

On March 1st we will post the results along with any notable voter comments.

Will be interested in these results. Many of my friends have at least 2 Social Networking sites they love, plus they bookmark their favorite over 50 sites. I know I do.

If I could cast a vote for great sites for those 55+ overall, I'd pick www.silverplanet.com and www.grandparents.com.

I think Twitter should be on the list! I also like Silver Planet - such a positive site. Eons is great for social networking as well.

Thank you for including Boomer Diva Nation! We may not be as large as the other sites mentioned here but the one thing we can take pride in is we are truly a sisterhood of diverse baby boomer women. Once you join our group, you will become a part of one incredible family of women!

We bring some incredible talents to the group and are always willing to lend a helping hand---whether it's business or personal. We are truly women on the move and making a difference!

Thanks for this poll. I like www.silverplanet.com because of its relevant blogs on dealing with aging issues such as "A Good Enough Daughter", which I can share with my friends dealing with caring for their parents.

My friends seem to really like Facebook.

I think you should add twitter to the list. Plus many are reconnecting on sites like Classmates.com and Reunions.com.

I'm finding that there are many wonderful blogs written by Baby Boomers.

I'm the Editor of the recently launched Timeless Bliss channel at Blissfully Domestic which provides articles and information for mature and Baby Boomer women.

I belong to several niche networking sites, and really like Twitter and Facebook. There are also several groups on Cafe Mom for Baby Boomers.

Interesting piece - there are many, many sites by and for boomers now - take a look at www.demystifyingdigital.com for one - they have a column called "Digital Grandparent" (that's me!) I belong to several social sites, too.

So many sites, so little time to really participate in them all. I guess that's why I like Silver Planet, where I can participate in topics as diverse as nutrition and caregiving in one place (www.silverplanet.com)
